Intensify Fight against Corruption

The chairman of Narc-Kenya Scandinavia (NKS), Mr. Daniel Mwaura has urged the Government to intensify the fight against corruption especially in the Police force. He said that the police in Kenya were generally doing a good job but their efforts were being jeopardised by corruption within their units. He said fighting crime in Kenya was a tough and risky job that needed a high level of discipline. He criticised the political influence by both the government and the opposition as constantly interfering and intimidating the police efforts. He added that the current situation was giving time to criminals, to became more organised and effective in crime. He said that wanainchi for a long time has being forced to take the law into their own hands by lynching suspects in mob justice. He noted that although the Government was making steps forward, there was need to intensify resources in combating crime by even promoting a good relationship between the police and the public. Mr. Mwaura also pointed out that the anti corruption unit was also a law enforcing institution that needed to operate independently. He said that corruption was the number one enemy that stood and blocked our way towards development.

Mr. Mwaura was addressing a group of Kenyan youths studying in Sweden who had paid him a courtesy call at his residence.

Meanwhile, in another meeting, the Narc-Kenya’s newly formed maendeleo ya wanawake unit expressed concern over the state of insecurity in Nairobi’s city estates. In Nation’s article “State within a state, how city gangs rule estates” was very shocking and wondered why the situation had deteriorated to that level. The NKS Vice Chairlady Ms. Wairimu Njoroge said that it would be very difficult to invest in Kenya when crime was so organised. According to Nations article, mafia-like gangs have sprung-up and secured territories within city estates and invaded business owners by pressing for payments known as “Security fee”. Conditions for not paying, is like experiencing a death sentence.

The gangsters were well organised, intelligent and sophisticated. The involvement of some crooked police officers in organised crime, has been worrying Kenyans for a long time making wanainchi loose their trust with the police. Ms. Wairimu Njoroge said that conditions for investment should not be improved just for the westerners, but also for Kenyans even those living abroad and most importantly, small businesses. She said that most Kenyans did not own big multi-national companies and therefore small businesses needed to be well protected. She said small businesses enabled Kenya to survive during hard times. She explained that the matter was serious and that crime was slowing development. On the same note, Ms. Njoroge also read out some proposed projects that Maendeleo ya Wanawake Scandinavia would tackle next year. One which she said was going to be very challenging was the issue of Child Support. She said that she hoped that men were going to support and participate in their move to make child support fully functional in Kenya. She said that women were left to suffer together with their children by men who did not take any responsibility after divorce.  She concluded that the women’s movement was going to pick-up the debate and welcomed all Kenyan women including their Swedish counterparts to join and support them.
